Short answer

A payment remark (betalningsanmärkning) stays for three years and makes many banks say no. 16 credits from 14 lenders and brokers still assess the application, at a higher rate. A current debt with Kronofogden makes a yes very unusual.

What a payment remark is, and is not

A payment remark is a note at the Swedish credit bureaus that an unpaid debt reached Kronofogden and a court order was issued. An unpaid invoice does not by itself give a remark.

The remark stays for three years for private individuals, counted from the registration. Paying the debt does not remove it, but a paid debt counts for less with many lenders.

Do this before you apply

  • Get your own credit report and see what it says. Incorrect remarks can be corrected.
  • Apply in one place, not widely. Every direct application makes its own credit check, and many checks in a short time lower your creditworthiness.
  • If your debts are more than you can manage, contact your municipality's budget and debt advice. The service is free and the adviser has a duty of confidentiality.

Common questions about loans with a payment remark

What is a payment remark?

A payment remark (betalningsanmärkning) is a note at the Swedish credit bureaus that a debt went unpaid and reached Kronofogden, the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Lenders see it when they make a credit check.

How long does a payment remark stay?

Three years for private individuals, counted from when it was registered. It does not disappear when the debt is paid, but a paid debt counts for less with many lenders.

Can I get a loan if I have debts with Kronofogden?

It is very unusual. Most lenders say no while there is a current debt with Kronofogden. Contact Kronofogden and your municipality's budget and debt advice first.

Does a co-applicant help?

Often. A co-applicant with a stable income and no payment remarks shares responsibility for the loan, which can lead to both a yes and a lower rate. The co-applicant becomes just as liable as you.

What is debt relief (skuldsanering)?

A decision by Kronofogden that writes down debts you cannot pay, in return for you paying what you can for a few years. You apply to Kronofogden. Your municipality's budget and debt advice can help.

What do I do if the application is refused?

Contact your municipality's budget and debt advice. The service is free, the adviser has a duty of confidentiality and can help you make a plan and talk to the people you owe money.
