Why small loans cost more per krona

A quick loan (snabblån) is a small loan, often a few thousand kronor, repaid over a few months. The interest is charged on a small amount, so the fees weigh heavily. A setup fee of SEK 588 is almost six per cent of a SEK 10,000 loan.

A credit line works differently. You get a limit and pay interest only on what you have drawn. Northmill Bank, Brixo, Saldo Bank, Credifi, Lumify, Flexkontot, ViaConto, Binly and Tomly offer credit lines.

The rules that protect you

The nominal rate may not be higher than the reference rate plus 20 percentage points, today 22.00%. Interest and fees together may never add up to more than you borrowed. You have a 14-day right of withdrawal and may always repay early, without a fee if the rate is variable.

Common questions about quick loans

Is a quick loan high-cost credit?

Usually. Credit counts as high-cost credit (högkostnadskredit) when the effective rate is at least 32%, the reference rate plus 30 percentage points. 6 of the 11 credits here are above that line. Northmill Bank's credit line (9.71%), Brixo's credit line (24.30%), Flexkontot's credit line (24.30%) and Creditstar's credit (25.06%) are below it. Daypay's quick loan depends on the amount: the shorter loans are above that line.

Can I repay a quick loan early?

Yes. You may always repay early and then pay interest only for the time you had the money. At a variable rate the lender may not charge a fee for it. Within 14 days you can also withdraw from the loan.

What happens if I do not pay on time?

First a reminder with a fee, then late-payment interest, and finally the debt can go to debt collection and Kronofogden, the Swedish Enforcement Authority. That leads to a payment remark (betalningsanmärkning). Interest and fees may still never add up to more than you borrowed. Contact the lender before the due date if you see that you cannot pay.

Does a quick loan affect my chances of other loans?

It can. The credit shows in your credit report, and several new credits in a short time can make a bank say no or set a higher rate on a mortgage or personal loan.
